Baker Construction got its start in a small house in Ohio, built on grit and grounded in solid values. Our story is proof that courage, determination, integrity, and a commitment to excellence are catalysts for achieving big dreams.
The roots of Baker Construction can be traced to the early 1960s, when 15-year-old Dan Baker began learning the concrete finisher’s trade from his grandfather, Elmer. Dan continued working as a concrete finisher to fund his college education until, at the age of 20, he decided to strike out on his own. He convinced his brothers, Jim and Ken, to make the leap with him.
In 1968, the brothers started Baker Cement Contractors, Inc., in a small house in Oxford, Ohio. Their commitment to doing the job right earned the fledgling company a reputation for quality work and customer satisfaction.
Baker Cement initially focused on residential work, but growth came fast. In 1972, the company was awarded its first commercial job. Just six years later, they won their first contract for more than 1 million square feet, putting Baker on the map. In 1982, the company opened its first regional office — in Houston, Texas — and changed its name to Baker Concrete Construction, Inc.
By the late-2010s, Baker Concrete Construction was the largest of nearly a dozen companies under the Baker Construction Enterprises umbrella. In February 2024, Baker Concrete united with several of its sister companies to form one team: Baker Construction. The consolidation expanded Baker’s portfolio of solutions, providing clients with a powerhouse of capabilities, technologies, and expertise to tackle their challenges.
The drive to find safer, better, and smarter ways to work has always animated Baker. From setting numerous records for continuous mat pours to earning recognition as the industry leader, Baker is proud of many of the practices and programs that help set us apart.
